The Importance of Consistency in Dance Training: Why Summer Classes and Multi-Style Training Matter

At Doty Performance, we believe dance is more than just movement, it’s a journey of growth, discipline, and self-expression. One key ingredient to truly thriving as a dancer is consistency in training. Whether your dancer is just starting out or looking to take their skills to the next level, regular practice throughout the year, including summer, is essential.

Why Summer Classes Are More Than Just Fun

Summer might seem like a break from the regular school-year schedule, but summer dance classes offer a unique opportunity for dancers to maintain momentum. Instead of losing progress over the summer months, dancers who keep moving through summer classes stay connected to their technique and creativity. Plus, summer classes often have a more relaxed and fun vibe, making it the perfect time to try new styles or refine skills in a less pressured environment.

The Magic of Multi-Style Training

Training in multiple dance styles is crucial for any dancer’s development. Each style brings different strengths, ballet builds strong technique and posture, jazz sharpens rhythm and expression, hip-hop adds groove and attitude, and contemporary focuses on fluidity and emotion. When dancers engage in several styles, their versatility grows, and they build a well-rounded foundation that serves them in any choreography or performance.

How Many Hours of Training Does It Take to “Click”?

  • 1-3 hours per week: This is a great place for dancers who want to keep dance fun and social. At this level, dancers enjoy moving and learning but may not yet see major leaps in skill.

  • 3-6 hours per week: This is the sweet spot where dance technique and muscle memory start to "click." Regular practice in this range allows dancers to internalize choreography, improve coordination, and gain confidence.

  • 7+ hours per week: At this level, dancers experience true progression. Their bodies adapt, skills become sharper, and creativity flourishes. Consistent training for 7 or more hours weekly can transform a dancer’s abilities and open doors to advanced opportunities.

Consistency = Confidence + Progress

When dancers consistently train, they don’t just get better—they build confidence, endurance, and the joy that comes with mastering movement. Summer classes and multi-style training are essential to keeping dancers engaged, energized, and excited about their dance journey.
